Memoirs of a geisha / a novel by Arthur Golden.
Nine-year-old Sayuri is taken from a poor fishing village in 1929 and sold into slavery to a giesha house. She learns the rigorous arts of the geisha, competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it. When World II erupts and geisha houses are forced to close, Sayuri is left destitute, and must come to terms with her new way of life.
