William Cabott Weston III, Boston Brahmin and recent Harvard grad, escapes the family shipping business by traveling to the American Southwest in 1916 to try his hand at journalism. With those hopes quickly dashed, he adopts the nickname Billy and befriends Monte Segundo, outdoorsman and fighter extraordinaire, and his fiancée, Rosa. Hoping to learn more about Monte's long-deceased parents, the three take a job driving cattle near Monte's boyhood homestead in Guadalupe Canyon, a border-fluid area between New Mexico, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico. A New York socialite vacationing at the ranch where the three stop to pick up the cattle herd goes missing, and army troops conscript Billy, Monte, and Rosa to serve as guides on the perilous rescue mission. Cox (Black Sun, 2021) elevates the plot by using a variety of supporting characters (including a West Point--educated lieutenant and a Black ranch hand) to explain Apache tribal history and the various Mexican factions fighting in the Mexican Revolution.
