ea. vol: 31p. (Cornerstones of Freedom Series). CIP. Childrens. June 1985. PLB $6.75. Gr 3-5 Stein's description of Washington and his troops' encounter with the British at Valley Forge is engaging, as are Canaday's illustrations. Direct quotes from Thomas Paine lend authenticity to the text. The Story of the Erie Canal is not so well done in that although the description of the events that preceded the construction of the canal is fine, De Witt Clinton, who was the driving force behind the project, comes across as a mere caricature. Readers will be able to appreciate the engineering feats and the final justification of the canal through its linkage of the east and the west and its ability to pay for itself through tolls. However, the illustrations in this book are poor and do not always match the text; the diagram of a canal lock is confusing. Zenata W. Pierre, Portland Public Schools, Oreg. (c) Copyright 2010.
